Led by Duke University, the Athena institute focuses on developing edge computing with groundbreaking AI functionality that leverages next-generation communications networks to provide previously impossible services at reasonable cost. Bringing together a multidisciplinary team of scientists, engineers, statisticians, legal scholars, and psychologists from seven universities, Athena’s goal is to transform the design, operation, and services of future mobile devices and networked systems.
Athena is committed to educating and developing our workforce, cultivating a diverse next generation of technical leaders who will ensure the ethical and fair use of AI. Together with its industrial and government partners, Athena will spearhead collaboration and knowledge transfer to maximize the translation of AI-empowered edge computing into new business opportunities. Athena is primarily supported by the National Science Foundation with partial funding from the Department of Homeland Security.
